PLOVDIV 2019 — EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE
The city of Plovdiv was selected to be one of Europe’s Capitals of Culture for 2019. The grand opening ceremony took place on January 12th, 2019 on the main city square. People from near and far came to participate and to leave their mark in history because this day would forever stay in the history of Plovdiv. The town’s motto is “Ancient and Eternal”. It has over 8,000 years of history already and we just added one more day to it!
International medias, such as USA TODAY, NEW YORK TIMES, DW and others have already published plenty of detailed information on the event, supported by pictures and videos, so we won’t go into that. What we would like to draw your attention to right now ta-daaa…drum roll… is the unique combination of:
PLOVDIV+CULTURE+WINE=BEST TRIP EVER
Bulgaria has many wine regions, but to be easier we have divided them on two main ones: Danube Valley & Thracian Valley wines. About 75% of the Bulgarian wines come from the Thracian Valley. Bulgaria’s wine traditions come from the times of the Thracian tribes, perhaps from even before that. Our red wines are world class and some of the typical Bulgarian varieties you must try are: Mavrud, Rubin and Melnik 55. Our friends at Wine Folly have described each variety in such detail that you will have no other choice, but to visit Bulgaria and try them out for yourself! The following chart, created by Wine Folly, will give you a better idea of our wines.
Note: the chart is from 2016. In the end of 2018 Bulgaria’s wine acres are significantly higher in number than the 148,000 shown below.
PLOVDIV, CULTURE AND…
Plovdiv is a city with centuries old history. The town itself represents layers on top of layers of all the different civilizations that had continuously inhabited the city for more than 8,000 years. The saying “only if the walls could speak…” is more valid for Plovdiv than any other city in the world except, probably, Athens or Rome. The three share similar history and are almost the same age, but the streets of Plovdiv have their own story to tell. You walk down the main street or the cobble stone roads of the Old Town and you can hear the city’ story; you can transfer back to the 18-19th centuries and see a town dotted with beautiful carriages, elegantly dressed aristocrats — they were mainly traders and merchants — and then you go down to the Kapana Creative District and you can meet the talented craftsmen of Plovdiv — everything was produced there! If you are more of a sensitive nature you could even go back to the times when Plovdiv was part of the Roman Empire and was called Puldin, Trimontium or Pulpudeva, or you can see Philip II of Macedonia, the father of Alexander the Great, who actually established the city as a city and called it after himself: Phillipopol. You can travel through history while in Plovdiv for as long as you want, but you could also enjoy the present, which is always AILYAK!
…IT’S WINE O’CLOCK!
The rich history, culture, diversity and relaxed lifestyle makes Plovdiv the perfect destination for wine tastings and wine festivals. The city is a proud host of the annual Wine & Gurme Festival, which happens annually in the month of May. This is the perfect event for you to not only taste the incredible Bulgarian wines, but to also meet our traditional cuisine and see how well it blends with our wine varieties. Some of Bulgaria’s most famous chefs and restaurants participate during the event!
In addition, every fall in the Old Town, Plovdiv hosts its annual Young Wine Defile Festival. It is truly a time to celebrate! Three days of tasting Bulgaria’s young wines and every year new wineries keep joining. It is three days of folklore songs and dances that define Plovdiv’s connection to Bulgaria’s young wines and it is a three day festival made absolutely accessible to people from all social classes. It is an event made “by the people and for the people”.

Partnering with Bulgaria Wine Tours
and some of Bulgaria’s best wine cellars! We have prepared and customized the best possible Culture & Wine tours for you! Plovdiv has its history and culture, but the Bulgarian wine cellars have their legends!
YESTERDAY’S WINE LEGENDS ARE TODAY’S REALITIES OF THE PLOVDIVIAN LIFESTYLE
The Greeks considered the wine to be “the drink of the gods”. We consider it to be a Bulgarian ‘resurrected’ tradition that goes hand-in-hand with our culture, ethnicity and particularly our ailyak mood! Our red wines bring a special spirit in the atmosphere of the city and they unite us as citizens. Plovdiv is more than just an old city; Plovdiv is more than just a European Capital of Culture for 2019; Plovdiv is more than just Bulgaria’s second largest city and large industrial town; Plovdiv is made out of long standing traditions. It takes a maximum of two full days to see the whole city, so give yourself the “gift of a day” and add another day to your itinerary by adding a wine tour. We promise that you won’t regret it!
IT IS ALWAYS A WINE TIME IN PLOVDIV!
We look forward to seeing you on one of our trips but in the meantime we would like to leave you with the following legend of one of Bulgaria’s best wine cellars, Chateau Kolarovo.
